Plato is quoted as saying, “You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation”, and Scarfe is quoted as saying, “The highest form of research is essentially play.” Play therapy is an important modality for mental health professionals since it uses a child’s natural medium to help them process and overcome many of life’s challenges. Learning how to use play therapy appropriately and in what circumstances it is recommended is the goal of this workshop. This workshop is for mental health professionals who have heard about play therapy, but don’t know what it is or why it would be recommended. We will cover the background of what play therapy is and what it takes to be effective in using play therapy in your clinical practice.

This training is for psychologists, social workers, counselors, school counselors, psychiatrists, family therapists, and other experienced professionals who work with children and families (CE credits can only be awarded to mental health professionals). The learning experience for this workshop is a convenient non-contact self-paced online training, with unlimited, lifetime access after registration and purchase starting June 7, 2021. Digital CE certificates are automatically generated with your name once all lessons have been completed, you have filled out the evaluation form, and you have passed the quiz with a score of 70% or more.

***NOTE: APT CE’s will NOT be awarded to registrants who are not mental-health professionals.***

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will:

  • Be able to accurately describe what play therapy is,
  • Be able to explain when play therapy is an effective modality to use, &
  • Be able to identify the difference between using play and being a play therapist.

About the Instructor

Michael Whitehead, PhD, LMFT, RPT-STM received his MS in Marriage and Family Therapy from Brigham Young University and his PhD in Human Development and Family Studies from Michigan State University. Dr. Whitehead is passionate about “whole family therapy”, wherein as many family members as possible come to each therapy session. His experience in using whole family therapy and his training in classical family therapy are hallmarks of his work, writing, research, and training. Dr. Whitehead is a Clinical Fellow, an Approved Supervisor, and recipient of the Certificate of Leadership from the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). He has authored or co-authored various research articles and book chapters on topics ranging from treating children with Family Therapy, to research methods in family therapy. He was a founding board member of the Systemic Perspective Across the Lifespan Topic Interest Network with AAMFT, is a board member of the Idaho Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, and is a Distinguished Core Part-Time Professor at National University (formerly Northcentral University – NCU) where he teaches and supervises graduate students in the Marriage and Family Therapy department. He has presented at the local and national level on topics ranging from parenting, behavior management, divorce, general family therapy, and play therapy.

Cancellation Policy

Fees include 2 hours of non-contact training, and access to handouts. Written cancellations received before more than 10% of the training is completed will receive a full refund and their access to the course will be terminated. Cancellations received after 10% of the training is completed but before 50% of the training is completed will forfeit a total of 75% of the registration fee, with the remainder being refunded. Unfortunately, refunds cannot be given after participants have completed more than 50% of the training.
